Fort Collins New Life CenterA Word from our Medical DirectorThe Institute for Progressive Medicine was founded by Allan Sosin, M.D., a board certified internist and nephrologist with over 35 years of experience. We treat people of all ages, with comprehensive, state of the art medicine. With access to both conventional and complementary therapies, we formulate programs for health that avoid the complications of drugs and surgery whenever possible. Here at the Institute for Progressive Medicine, our doctors work with you to arrive at the best possible treatment plan. We want you to have all treatment options available to you. Our staff includes board-certified physicians and naturopaths with extensive training and experience in nutrition, vitamin and mineral supplementation, herbal therapies, prolotherapy, acupuncture, natural hormone replacement, chelation, intravenous nutrient therapies, and enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP). Our purpose is to support health and manage illness with minimal use of drugs. Some alternative practitioners avoid drugs entirely. We believe it is important to have expertise in conventional therapies, in order to determine when drugs and surgery can be deferred, when and how drugs may be withdrawn, and when they should be employed. It is a fallacy of current medical practice to label all problems as diseases and to intervene with chemical cures. At times the cure becomes worse than the disease. We often see people respond better to life-style change s and targeted nutritional supplements than to an array of drugs. We live in a toxic world. Unfortunately, many physicians are not aware of the significant toxic burden that is added by layering an assortment of prescription drugs on their patients. The more drugs a patient takes, the greater the chance of significant adverse effects from those drugs. Older people, especially, are sensitive to these adverse effects. When it is safe, and possible to do so, drugs and drug dosages should be reducedWe specialize in helping people get off drugs, including prescription drugs that are causing them problems or that they no longer desire to continue. Psychiatric medications, including sedatives, tranquilizers, anti-depressants and anti-psychotic agents are withdrawn gradually over a period of weeks to several months, one at a time, in order to avoid significant withdrawal effects. They can be discontinued more quickly when patients have been taking them for only days or a few weeks. We have found that adding certain nutritional supplements make withdrawal much easier. These include magnesium and calcium, omega 3 fatty acids, SAM-e, B- complex vitamins, inositol, and amino acids such as 5HTP or tryptophan. Vitamins, minerals, and amino acids given intravenously are especially helpful in minimizing withdrawal symptoms. These treatments are available in our office IV treatment room, where therapy is provided in comfortable surroundings in little over an hour. Sauna therapy is a particular successful method of enhancing detoxification from drugs as well as virtually any toxic material, including environmental toxins. Many patients with chronic fatigue, chemical sensitivity, fibromyalgia, stress disorders and cognitive problems have benefited from sauna therapy. Allen E. Sosin, M.D. Medical Director
